The Board of Directors of the Road Haulage Association has elected Andy Boyle of Herefordshire-based A.B.E. (Ledbury) Limited as its new Chairman.

Andy takes over the job from Willie Oliver from Northern Ireland. “It’s a fact that there is seldom what can be described as a ‘good time’ in the industry these days”, said Willie Oliver. “The industry is going through a particularly turbulent time at present and I know that in electing Andy as the Association’s new Chairman, the Board have chosen the right man for the job.”

Increases in most HM Revenue and Customs’ Advisory Fuel Rates (AFRs) for company car drivers have been welcomed by ACFO, the UK’s premier organisation for fleet operators.

The scheduled HMRC announcement was expected, but in the light of extraordinary and ongoing fuel price rises this year, the new rates come into effect from June 1 and not July 1 as previously expected.

The Freight Transport Association has led the way on recent changes to kerbside loading limits that have seen Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) for some operators fall by 75 per cent.

FTA campaigned for kerbside loading limits for commercial operators to be raised from 20 to 40 minutes after 11am and the recent pilot by Westminster City Council has seen PCNs for overstaying those limits halved, with some operators reducing PCN costs by 75 per cent at a stroke.

It’s combination of petrol and electric power has found favour with motorists keen to increase fuel economy and reduce emissions without sacrificing too much comfort or performance. Indeed, in America, the Prius is seen as an icon of ‘green’ credentials and for this reason is favoured by movie stars (even if they do own other gas-guzzling vehicles). The UK Right to Repair Campaign (UK R2RC) has welcomed the Commission’s statement that its evaluation of the operation of the automotive Block Exemption Regulation does not prejudge any decision on the future of that legislation. However, UK R2RC also said that parts of the Commission’s proposals would add uncertainty, and penalise the independent aftermarket by making remedies for market abuse harder to obtain. The independent aftermarket needed simple and sector-specific legislation.

The new SEAT Ibiza is officially one of the very safest cars in its class, following its five-star rating in the stringent Euro NCAP tests.

The maximum five stars were awarded for the passenger protection test, with a four-star rating for child protection and three stars for pedestrian protection. The collective result is one of the very highest in the supermini class.
