The German maker of small vehicles Smart has presented two new Fortwo and Forfour models that will be available in early 2015. The new cars come packed with new standard features not included before such as direct steer electric power steering, an automatic start/stop function and LED daytime running lights.

The new Smart cars are more economical, agile, stylish and spacious than ever before. The new Fortwo now offers two engines with 71 HP (52 kW) and 90 HP turbo (66 kW) of power, connected to a new 5-speed manual transmission for the first time but if you are not satisfied you can get an optional six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission for GBP 995. The 71 HP engine brings 68.9 mpg (4.1 liters per 100 km) of combined fuel efficiency and releases just 93 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer and has a top speed of 94 mph (151 km/h). The 90 HP turbo model, which sells for GBP 595 more, provides 67.3 mpg (4.2 liters per 100 km) combined, emits 97 grams per kilometer and has a top speed of 96 mph (154 km/h). The car is just 2.69 meters long and its small dimensions set a new tiny turning circle benchmark at 6.95 meters kerb-to-kerb, which makes it perfect for city driving. On the inside driver and passenger alike benefit from the fact that Fortwo boasts the most interior space in relation to the size of any car in the segment.

The new Forfour currently offers the 71 HP engine only and like in the Fortwo the engine is connected to the already mentioned 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine achieves 67.3 mph (4.2 liters/100 km) combined and emits just 97 g/km of carbon dioxide for a top speed of 94 mph (151 km/h). The car makes a turning circle in just 8.65 meters kerb-to-kerb and the rear doors open at an 85 degree angle making access easy, while the rear seats and front passenger seat fold flat making the forfour practical for passengers and large loads alike.  Items up to 2.20 meters in length and 0.95 meters high will fit in the car. A 90 HP version will follow a bit later.

The new Smart cars offer three model lines with all of them available for the Fortwo and Forfour – passion, prime and proxy. The passion version offers 15-inch eight-spoke alloy wheels that are fitted to the car along with automatic climate control, the Smart audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, and a choice of either an orange/black interior or a white/black interior. The prime offers 15-inch five-twin-spoke black alloys with high sheen finish, and is fitted with a panoramic glass roof with sun protection, as well as black leather upholstery, heated seats and lane-keeping assist. Additional dashboard instrument pods with a cockpit clock and rev counter are a returning Smart staple.
