The engine range includes four diesel and four petrol engines. They feature innovative technologies including single and dual turbocharging and High Precision Direct Injection, as well as award-winning EfficientDynamics technologies.

BMW 520d saloon offers class-leading emission levels of 129g/km of CO2 and combined fuel consumption of just 57.6 mpg. It achieves this through a combination of lightweight engineering (aluminium crankcase), the latest generation of common-rail direct fuel injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, mated to its four-cylinder engine.

The next more powerful engine is 525d, which is 3.0 litre all-aluminium developing 204hp ,yet still records a combined 45.6mpg and 162g/km CO2 emissions to set a new benchmark as the most efficient six-cylinder diesel model on the market.

The new BMW 530d shares the same engine with an output of 245hp but returns an impressive 44.8mpg on the combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of only 166g/km.

The most powerful diesel in the range is in BMW 535d, which develops 299hp. The power unit features a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre engine that is capable of an electronically-limited 155mph top speed and a zero to 62mph time of 5.7 seconds, yet still manages 46.3mpg and emissions of only 162g/km.

The petrol variant are 523i, 528i, 535i and 550i.

The punnyest 523i is a six-cylinder delivering 204hp. It is followed by 528i, which has 258hp and the 535i with 306hp combining  single turbocharger technology, High Precision Direct Injection and variable VALVETRONIC valve management.

The most powerful 550i is 4.4 litre bi-turbo V8 with 407hp.

All models come with 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, except 550i, which features eight-speed automatic gearbox. Of course, as an option the new high-tec gearbox can be fitted to all models including 520d.

All model of the new 5 series come with an array of EfficientDynamics technologies. Innovations such as Optimum gearshift indicator, Brake Energy Regeneration and Active Aerodynamics all feature.  But it is the introduction of Auto Start-Stop on a manual transmission BMW 520d Saloon - a first for the sector - that provides the latest talking point.

The option list is enormous, but the standard equipment can satisfy even the most fastidious clients. It includes Dakota leather upholstery, Bluetooth telephone preparation, automatic air conditioning with two-zone control, front and rear Park Distance Control and 7-inch control display and iDrive.

Some of the intelligent new technology like the Park Assist automatic parking, Integral Active Steering, Head-up Display and Night Vision with pedestrian recognition can also be specified.
