Hyundai Kona (2024)
Hyundai has showcased the 2024 Kona Electric, Limited, and N Line models at the New York International Auto Show, making their debut in North America. The Kona, which is a premium small SUV, comes in different powertrain options, with the all-electric variant leading the pack, providing advanced safety, convenience, and an impressive electric range of 260 miles, as per initial estimates by Hyundai. The second-generation Kona offers one of the most comprehensive product packages in the small SUV category, with a wide range of powertrain options, including an electric and internal combustion engine, and a sporty N Line version. The new Kona will be available at U.S. dealers this summer, and the Kona Electric will arrive in the late fall.
In an unusual move, Hyundai prioritized the electrified powertrain while developing the new Kona platform, aligning with the company's plan to expedite electrification, which includes introducing 11 new Hyundai EVs worldwide by 2030.

The all-new Kona retains its distinctive style with a robust, active design and larger dimensions, catering to the needs of active customers of all ages. It comes equipped with innovative technologies and convenience features that ensure a safe, connected, and comfortable ride. Some of the upgrades include dual panoramic display screens measuring 12.3 inches, Hyundai's next-generation infotainment system, Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates, and Digital Key 2 Touch.
The Kona Electric model is powered by a 64.8-kWh battery that is expected to offer a range of up to 260 miles based on Hyundai's preliminary internal testing. The battery can recharge from 10 percent to 80 percent in about 43 minutes using the available 400V fast-charging capability. The standard battery, on the other hand, is estimated to provide approximately 197 miles of range based on initial internal tests.
The all-new model has unique proportions, featuring increased dimensions and interior volume. The length of the Kona internal combustion version is now 171.3 inches, which is 5.7 inches longer, while the wheelbase has increased by 2.3 inches to 104.7 inches. Additionally, the overall width is now 71.9 inches, which is a full inch wider than its predecessor.
EV-driven Exterior Design
Hyundai took an unconventional approach to the development of the 2024 Kona, using an EV-to-ICE development process. This resulted in a futuristic exterior that emphasizes the Kona's unique look, combining sleek and rugged design elements.
The new Kona Electric boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.27, making it aerodynamically efficient without compromising on style. The sculpted wheel arch armor, parametric surfaces, and dynamic chrome lines connecting the belt line to the rear spoiler and center high-mounted stop lamp add character to the vehicle's pure volume. The Electric variant also features a Pixelated Seamless Horizon Lamp and Pixel graphics, adding a unique touch. Furthermore, the Kona offers a range of vivid exterior colors that cater to the diverse lifestyles of a broad spectrum of customers.

Roomier and More Versatile Interior
Hyundai designed the Kona's larger interior space to cater to a wider range of customer lifestyles, thanks to its EV-based universal architecture and upscaled dimensions. The driver-centric front row features a floating horizontal C-Pad and two 12.3-inch panoramic display screens.
The shift-by-wire gear selector has been relocated from the center console to a stalk behind the steering wheel, freeing up space in the open console area. This highlights the Kona's spacious interior, which offers a versatile and comfortable space for driver and passengers. Driver controls have been moved around the steering wheel to make way for a multi-use center console with a rotational cupholder design. Ambient interior lighting options correspond to drive modes, acceleration, or to suit the driver's mood. The second row features a Curveless Bench Seat, allowing maximum rear passenger legroom. Furthermore, a two-stage latching system enables rear seat reclining.
The second-row seat and rear compartment of the new Kona are fully foldable, providing 25.5 cubic feet of rear cargo volume with seatbacks up and 63.7 cubic feet with seatbacks folded down. Loading cargo is now more convenient with the available Smart Power Tailgate that makes accessing cargo space easier.
Kona Electric has several unique features to enhance the driving experience, including battery preconditioning to ensure optimal performance in colder temperatures and a charging port door lamp for visibility at night. Additional features include forward storage, active grille shutters, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability for charging other electrical equipment. The i-PEDAL driving mode and Smart Regenerative System adjusts regeneration according to traffic conditions. With the bi-directional onboard charger, the V2L function can power devices or charge electrical equipment using the available V2L adapter from the front charging port.
The i-PEDAL feature of the Kona Electric allows drivers to control acceleration, deceleration and stopping using only the accelerator pedal. The Smart Regenerative System adjusts the level of regenerative braking based on real-time traffic flow data for greater efficiency.
Refined and Efficient Internal Combustion Powertrains
Hyundai prioritizes high efficiency for Kona powertrains. Kona has two gasoline powertrain options, including a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Atkinson engine with an estimated 147 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 132 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm. This engine is paired with a Smartstream Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) to optimize fuel efficiency. The Atkinson cycle design focuses on maximizing the cylinder expansion ratio during the compression stroke to improve efficiency.
The 1.6-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine in the N Line and Limited trims delivers an estimated 190 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,700-4,500 rpm, ensuring smooth acceleration in urban driving. The engine provides low-RPM responsiveness in everyday driving conditions, with peak torque starting at just 1,700 rpm and holding through 4,500 rpm. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that offers excellent efficiency, seamless shifting, and brisk acceleration.
Responsive and Refined Chassis Tuning
Hyundai designed Kona with improved driving dynamics and responsive performance in mind, specifically for various driving conditions in urban and multi-surface areas. Kona's planted stance, resulting from its long wheelbase, short overhangs, and wide track, provides exceptional agility in urban environments, with improved linear stability and ride comfort. Kona's internal combustion models come with a MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and a hollow stabilizer bar design. Kona AWD models are equipped with a multi-link rear suspension with stabilizer bar, while FWD models have a refined torsion beam rear axle design. Kona Electric models feature a MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and a multi-link rear suspension.
Kona N Line Sporty Variant
The N Line model has many features including bodycolor cladding, 19-inch N Line alloy wheels, N Line rear spoiler, dual-outlet exhaust tips, Bose premium audio, sport seating with red accents, aluminum sport pedals, N Line scuff plates, and black mirrors. The front and rear fascia designs are wing-shaped and aggressive to give a sportier appearance and emphasize a lower stance.

Connectivity with Over-the-Air Updates
The all-new Kona makes use of Over-the-Air (OTA) technology for software updates, enabling car owners to upgrade their cars with the latest software, saving them time and providing a convenient and upgradable experience. These updates can improve the car's performance and add new features using wireless communication. Additionally, the 2024 Kona features Digital Key 2 Touch, which allows owners to use compatible smartphones or smartwatches for locking, unlocking, and starting their vehicles using near-field communication (NFC) technology, providing an elevated level of security. Digital Key 2 Touch also allows secure sharing of keys with up to three people and can be revoked at the owner's discretion.
The new Kona has an advanced infotainment system with a modern interface that seamlessly unites the various vehicle displays. Dual panoramic display screens are integrated into the audio-video navigation (AVN) system for an immersive digital experience. The Surround View Monitor (SVM) assists in safe parking, and efficient LED headlamps illuminate the way forward. An eight-speaker Bose Premium Sound System with a subwoofer provides an immersive listening experience. Passengers have access to two USB-C chargers and a power outlet in the front, and two USB-C chargers in the rear, with wireless charging capability. Kona also has an available Wi-Fi hotspot.
SmartSense Advanced Driver Assistance
The new Kona comes with advanced safety features not commonly found in small SUVs, providing drivers with added safety and convenience. Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) enables the vehicle to be moved forward or backward out of tight parking spots via the smart key button. Blind-spot View Monitor (BVM) offers live video of the blind spot area in the instrument cluster, aiding drivers when changing lanes.
Other safety features of Kona include enhanced Forward Collision-avoidance Assist (FCA) with junction turning support, Highway Driving Assist for maintaining the vehicle in the center of the lane, Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW), Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), High Beam Assist (HBA), Surround View Monitor (SVM), Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA), Driver Attention Warning (DAW), Rear Occupant Alert/Safe Exit Warning, and Parking Collision Avoidance Assist-Reverse.
The Kona also has features that make driving more convenient, like Smart Cruise Control (SCC), Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) with stop and go, Parking Distance Warning (forward/side/reverse with contour warning), and Remote Start.
Enhanced Bluelink+ Features

The essential safety and maintenance features like Auto Collision Assistance, SOS Assistance, Remote Diagnostics, Maintenance Reminders, and over-the-air ECU Updates are available for the life of the technology and 4G LTE network, with no trial period.
Kona Electric models come with the latest version of Bluelink connectivity technologies, offering features such as battery management and charging time selection, remote profile management, and vehicle status notifications. Maintenance Alert Enhancement helps track maintenance intervals, and the feature can be reset using the multimedia system. Bluelink+ Basic will be available for subsequent owners to connect with no fees and includes key safety and maintenance features.
